Preface

We are obsessed with the idea of time travel. It saturates our films, our novels, our television. Through sheer imaginative persistence, we treat it as something that must eventually become possible, as though someone, somewhere, will one day discover the key. Einstein offered us a glimpse of what forward travel might look like through relativity. Time dilation is real, measurable, and grounded in physics. But the idea of going back, of returning to a moment already spent, is a different scenario altogether. I am far from the only person to ask the familiar questions: Could I go back and change time? Could I stop Hitler? Prevent the Holocaust? Alter the battle of Trafalgar? These are the fantasies that fuel our stories. But few explore the problem from a subjective, architectural level, the level where identity, causality, and continuity collide. Here we encounter paradoxes (defined by us, not the universe), and concepts such as branching timelines. And the deeper we push, the more the ideas collapse under their own weight of complexity. At some point, the questions outnumber the answers. And so, because the truth hurts, we return to the science fiction for comfort and hope.

Narrative

The Plausible Path — Forward Travel Through Relativity

To begin, let’s anchor ourselves in what is not speculative, what is demonstrably real. It is possible to leave one’s present timeline and return to it later, having experienced less time than those who remained behind. This is not fantasy. It is relativity. Imagine our traveller, a spaceman with a wife and family. He departs Earth, flying toward the fringes of a black hole. At first, his journey is simple: travelling at near light speed, his seconds match those on Earth. If he were to return immediately, the time passed on Earth would equal his flight time, and so there would be no distortion and no paradox. But then he enters the gravitational well of the black hole. Here, time itself bends. His personal clock slows relative to Earth’s. What feels to him like a short period becomes decades for those he left behind. Upon his return, he finds his wife passed away, his son aged, and his grandson grown to maturity. Yet he himself has aged only by the duration of his flight and his brief passage near the black hole. And here lies the crucial point: He and his family remain in the same timeline. Both his time and Earth’s time have moved forward, simply at different rates. No branching, no divergence, and no paradox. Just the natural consequence of gravity and velocity acting upon time. This phenomenon is not conjecture. It is rooted in logic, tested by experiment, and confirmed by analysis. Atomic clocks, satellites, and high‑speed particles all reveal the same truth: time is not absolute. It is relative to speed and gravity. Thus, we can comfortably believe this: Forward travel into the future is not science fiction. It is science fact. But the memory of what has been missed on Earth is a story to be learnt and is not his to tell.

The Implausible Path — The Fantasy of Returning to the Past

And this is where the journey becomes interesting, and far less stable. How does one go back in time? A tear in the fabric of the air we breathe, a machine wound with time‑distortion coils, a wormhole conveniently anchored to a specific century and place in spacetime. These are the tools of imagination, not physics. None have been observed, tested, or even hinted at by the universe we inhabit. Yet the fantasies persist. If backward travel were possible, the temptations would be immediate and dramatic. Spoil Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar. Prevent my father from ever meeting my mother. Deflect that asteroid that extinguished the dinosaurs. But then what? The logic collapses under its own weight. The constraints multiply. The assumptions become absurd, and the consequences, especially for the traveller, become impossible to reconcile. If I remain in the same timeline and deflect the dinosaur‑killing asteroid, then in that same timeline I should vanish as if I never existed. My parents never met. My entire lineage dissolves. And yet I am still standing there, having performed the act that erased me. Or perhaps I do not vanish at all. I simply step into a different timeline, one where humans never evolved, and my future self resembles a T‑Rex in shorts and a tee shirt, wearing glasses and hearing aids, writing about the marvels of time travel with a pen the size of a garden hoe. The mind boggles, not at the spectacle, but at the sheer conceptual incoherence. Backward travel demands a universe that contradicts itself. It requires identity without origin, causality without continuity, and existence without history. The logic breaks the physics, and the physics breaks the logic.

What Is Given

These are the elements supported by physics, logic, or direct observation.

  • Time moves forward for all observers — different rates, yes; different directions, no.
  • Time dilation is real — speed and gravity slow time relative to other observers. This is experimentally verified.
  • Forward time travel is possible — a traveller can experience less time than those who remain on Earth. This is not speculative.
  • A traveller who experiences time dilation remains in the same timeline — his time and Earth’s time both move forward, just at different rates.
  • No known mechanism allows a person to reverse their own temporal flow — physics permits stretching time, not rewinding it.
  • No experiment or observation has ever shown backward time travel — not even a hint.
  • Causality appears to be protected.

What Is Not Given

These are assumptions, fantasies, or untested hypotheses — not grounded in evidence.

  • Wormholes that connect different points in time — mathematically possible, physically unobserved.
  • The ability to “tear” spacetime locally, no evidence, no mechanism.
  • Machines that generate time reversal — pure fiction.
  • The ability to overwrite one’s own past — no model supports this without collapsing causality.
  • The idea that the universe allows paradoxes — every serious model avoids them.
  • Branching timelines as a physical reality — a useful narrative device, not an observed phenomenon.
  • The traveller’s ability to erase themselves or their lineage — this only exists in story logic, not physics.

The Grey Zone — Unknowns and Unproven Possibilities

These are neither givens nor dismissed, they sit in the speculative middle.

  • Wormholes that connect two spatial points — possible in theory, unstable in practice.
  • Exotic matter that could stabilise a wormhole — hypothetical, never observed.
  • Quantum interpretations that allow branching — philosophically interesting, not experimentally confirmed.
  • Whether the universe has deeper structures we haven’t discovered — always possible, never guaranteed.

A Structural Examination of the Architecture of Backward Travel

Once we strip away the spectacle, romance, and cinematic shortcuts, we are left with a single, unavoidable question: What does it mean to go back in time? Structurally, not narratively or emotionally. To explore this, we begin with the simplest possible premise: Time proceeds at one second per second — forwards. This is the only uncontroversial truth in the entire conversation. From this, our traveller departs. He leaves his native timeline, let’s call it Timeline A, and arrives (we will leave the mechanics of how he left A to reach B for a later section) at an earlier coordinate, and we will call this Timeline B. Why B? Because our traveller now has a presence in both timelines and, crucially, they are not the same timeline with respect to the traveller. The popular imagination immediately leaps to what he might do in B. But the real question, the one that matters, is far more fundamental: What happens to Timeline A? Because A is the only place where his origin exists: his memories, his identity, his causal chain. If he leaves A, does A pause? Does it wait for him? Does it collapse? Does it vanish? Those connected to the traveller will notice his disappearance. Does it simply carry on in his absence? No model of physics, logic, or continuity supports any mechanism for halting, overwriting, or erasing A. Given this, we must assume the only coherent outcome: A continues. A persists. A does not care that he has left. And yet, for the sake of the fantasy, our traveller intends to return and rejoin A as if he never left. This is the first fracture in the entire idea: Backward travel is not return. It is relocation.

To understand why, we apply the only three constraints the universe reliably offers:

  1. Relativity — It permits travel into the future through time dilation. It offers no mechanism for reversing one’s own temporal flow.
  2. Causality — It forbids contradictions. It does not forbid divergence.
  3. Continuity — A traveller’s personal timeline must always move forward, regardless of where he lands.

These constraints do not prevent arrival in the past. They simply prevent rewinding. And so, the traveller arrives in B, not as a returning native, but as a foreign body entering a new causal chain.

  • His actions shape B, not A.
  • His presence influences B, not A.
  • His memories belong to A,
  • but his consequences belong to B.

He has become something the universe has no natural category for: An orphan of his own history. From his perspective, A is gone. From the universe’s perspective, A continues without him. Two truths, both valid, neither reconcilable.

This leads to the most misunderstood scenario of all: meeting oneself. Popular culture treats this as paradox. But paradox only exists when two entities claim the same origin. Here, they do not. The younger self is the product of B. The elder self is the product of A. They share a face, not a history. If the elder persuades the younger not to travel, nothing collapses. Two branches. Two continuities. Two selves. No paradox. Only divergence.

And so, we reach the inevitable conclusion, structurally, without emotion or morals: Backward travel does not restore the past. It does not repair mistakes, undo grief, offer redemption. It offers only exile. The traveller may go back, but he cannot go home. He may intervene, but he cannot rewrite. He may arrive in the past, but he cannot return to his past. Let us assume he attempts to return to the future using the same logic that governs forward travel, unless the gateway he used is bidirectional. Even then, continuity binds him to B, not A. Our traveller is now trapped in Timeline B, with two versions of himself active. Backward time travel is not a mechanism of correction. It is a mechanism of abandonment, a risk rarely considered. And for this reason, not poetic, but logical, it is almost certainly not a feature of the universe we inhabit.

The Requirements of a Gateway — A Narrative of Impossible Precision

If our traveller truly wished to go back in the real, physical universe, the mechanism that carried him would need to do far more than simply “rewind” a clock. It would need to perform an act of staggering precision. Because the past is not a place. It is a coordinate in spacetime, and spacetime is not still. Our intrepid traveller chooses, say, 12 June 1985 at 3:14pm a significant date in European History. The planet Earth was not where it is now. It was and is still spinning at over 11,000 miles per hour, racing around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, while the Sun itself was arcing through the galaxy, which in turn was drifting through an even larger cosmic structure. To arrive at that precise location and moment, the gateway would need to know exactly where that tiny patch of space once was, not just in time, but in motion. It would need to track the worldline of that location across billions of shifting variables, then deposit the traveller into the precise cubic metre of reality that once held his childhood bedroom, or the deck of a ship, or the battlefield he intends to alter. Anything less, and he would materialise in empty space. Precision alone is not enough; the gateway must also preserve continuity. Our traveller’s personal timeline must continue moving forward, even as he steps into a moment where the universe is moving backward relative to him. His body, his memories, his identity, all must remain intact. He cannot be rewound. He cannot be reset. He must arrive in the past as a forward‑moving anomaly. And then there is causality. The gateway must decide, explicitly, structurally, what happens when he arrives:

  • Does he enter a new branch, leaving his original timeline untouched?
  • Or does the universe protect itself by ensuring his actions were always part of history? It cannot be ambiguous. A real mechanism must choose. It must also handle the problem of identity. Two versions of the traveller will now exist:
  • the younger self, native to the past
  • the elder self, foreign to it They share a face, not a history.

The gateway must allow this without collapse, contradiction, or magical merging. And finally, the gateway must honour the laws of energy and mass. A human being cannot simply appear in the past without cost. His mass must come from somewhere. His arrival must not violate conservation. In short, the mechanism must:

  • track the motion of the universe
  • target a precise spacetime coordinate
  • preserve the traveller’s continuity
  • protect causality
  • maintain identity coherence
  • obey conservation laws
  • and deliver him into a past that can tolerate his presence

This is not a machine. It is a spacetime re‑alignment engine, a device capable of bending time without breaking reality. And no such mechanism has ever been observed, hinted at, or even meaningfully theorised. Which is why, for now, the gateway remains a dream, a beautiful one, perhaps, but a dream, nonetheless.

Postscript — The Quest for the Gateway

There is no backwards travel within Timeline A. Physics does not allow it. And yet, despite everything this doctrine has laid bare, the human instinct persists there must be a way. If backward travel is ever to exist, it will not be through fantasy, spectacle, or cinematic shortcuts. It will require a gateway, a structure yet to be discovered, that obeys rules we do not yet understand, and perhaps rules we have not yet imagined. Such a gateway would need to satisfy impossible criteria:

  • It must preserve continuity.
  • It must protect causality.
  • It must allow relocation without collapse.
  • It must honour the traveller’s origin without erasing it.

In other words, it must do what no known mechanism can do: bend time without breaking it. Anecdotally, the world has never seen such a thing. There are photographs online, curious, conspiratorial, suggestive, hinting that someone, somewhere, may have slipped into the past. But these artefacts are fragile, easily forged, and never accompanied by the one detail that matters: Did they ever return? If they did not, then they are not travellers. They are exiles, lonely, unrecorded, and forever severed from the timeline that made them. And if they did return, they returned so quietly that the universe left no trace. Perhaps that is the final truth of the gateway: If it exists, it will not announce itself. It will not roar or shimmer or tear the sky. It will be subtle, disciplined, and bound by rules we have yet to discover.

Until then, the gateway remains a quest, not for spectacle, but for understanding and learning why the universe guards it so fiercely.

Yet… one question lingers, impossible to ignore: If a gateway can deliver us to a moment already written, who is to say it cannot deliver us to a moment not yet born? After all, where we’re going, there are no roads!
